In this brief introduction to Derrida’s hypothesis concerning what he calls “national-philosophism,” I begin by taking as my guiding thread Derrida’s engagement with Husserl, Hegel, and Heidegger. Then, I place the hypothesis of “national-philosophism” in the framework of his seminar “Le fantôme de l’autre” of the mid-80s, which is part of the larger seminar “Nationalité et nationalisme philosophiques”. In conclusion, I examine this hypothesis in terms of three of its main characteristics: generality, exemplarity, and invariance.
